The convent faced the castle across the valley,
then the earthquake made the building an open archive.
Nuno Álvares Pereira laid the first stone in 1389. The 1755 earthquake destroyed the church; Neo-Gothic rebuilding begun in 1756 stopped when the orders were dissolved in 1834. An archaeological museum opened here in 1864.
