Founded with royal support,
it proved resilient through earthquake and fire.
Its first stone was laid in 1711. The plan is attributed to João Antunes and the works to João Frederico Ludovice and Custódio Vieira. Opened in 1736, it suffered limited damage in 1755 and sheltered displaced parishes.
The church opens while decoration and adjoining facilities continue to develop.
It shelters displaced parishes after the earthquake; the church largely survives the convent fire of 1847.
