Maritime wealth entered the stone
while monks served those setting out.
In 1496 Manuel I sought papal approval for the monastery; work began in 1501 and continued for about a century. Diogo de Boitaca and later masters shaped its monumental Manueline architecture.
Building begins under Boitaca's early direction.
The complex is listed as a National Monument.
